Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

All submissions to the Review of European and Russian Affairs (RERA) will be subjected to a process of double-blind review by established scholars selected by the editors. Contributions will be judged on the basis of scholarship, quality of research, and relevance to the study of the European Union, its Member States, states of the former Soviet Union, and Central and Eastern Europe. Disciplinary areas covered include, but are not limited to, social sciences, international affairs, history, and cultural studies. Contributions may include research papers and literature or book reviews.

Research papers should make an original contribution to the field of study. This original contribution can, for example, take the form of new empirical research conducted by the author, application of a theoretical approach that helps to understand existing data from a new perspective, or testing of a clear research hypothesis with new data. Please note that, as an academic research-based journal, RERA does not publish editorial-style papers primarily expressing authors’ views. Papers should not be mainly a review of existing secondary literature on the topic.

Submissions should normally be no more than 8000 words (excluding the list of references, tables, and abstract).  For submissions longer than this, please contact the editorial team at rera-journal@carleton.ca. In addition to full length articles, we also accept reviews (500 to 750 words) of recent and noteworthy books as well as review essays on recent debates. Authors are encouraged to contact the editors to determine if a review essay or book review project is appropriate for the journal.

All contributions should be edited carefully for professional presentation. Authors should use the author-date documentation system of the Chicago Manual of Style (16th edition). Footnotes should not be used for citations, but only sparingly for supplemental information that cannot be included in the text. Do not use endnotes. Please proofread your article using conventions of Canadian English (English (Canada) option in Word). Articles may be re-formatted for publication.

All materials should include the following:

  • A cover letter or e-mail indicating the author's contact information, including affiliation (if applicable), e-mail address, phone number, and mailing address.
  • A copy of your article or review in the Word Document format. Authors should ensure that neither their names nor other identifying information appear on any pages other than the separate title page.
  • For articles, a short abstract (approximately 150 words)
  • A short biography (approximately 100 words) of the author or authors (for co-authored pieces)

Once submitted for consideration to RERA, the article may not be submitted to any other publications. RERA only accepts original unpublished articles.

The editors will keep authors apprised of the status of their submissions.
